Giam's proposal suggests that at least one preschool per HDB estate offer extended care hours, staffed by "ancillary care assistants" to avoid overburdening core educators. He also questions whether the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) has conducted a survey to gauge parental interest in longer operating hours, arguing that without such data, we cannot assume low demand.
In response, Minister of State for Social and Family Development Goh Pei Ming acknowledges the challenges faced by working parents but emphasizes the importance of flexible work arrangements. He notes that the number of preschools offering care beyond 7 pm has decreased from 40 in 2021 to just 20 today. Extending hours, he adds, would require additional staffing, resources, and costs, which centers may pass on to parents through late-charge fees. Ermaothman suggests that instead of extending preschool hours, childcare and family care leave provisions for working parents should be increased. She also proposes that companies end work earlier or offer flexible work-from-home arrangements to allow parents to pick up their children by 7 pm.
Another TikToker, @sunnysideup_sg, adds that the preschool industry has been suffering in silence and slowly eroding away. Having witnessed many passionate teachers leave, she argues that longer hours do not equate to better care but rather result in "tired children and even more tired educators."
