Miyake Design Studio and Asics have joined forces on an innovative footwear development project, resulting in the unveiling of the 'Hyper Taping' sneaker. This collaboration, dubbed 'Issey Miyake Foot,' showcases the Japanese fashion brand's commitment to exploring new footwear possibilities by reevaluating the human foot's anatomy. The first product from this project, a shoe that made its debut during the IM Men spring/summer 2026 show at Paris Fashion Week, will be released next month.
The 'Hyper Taping' sneaker is a unique creation, featuring the iconic Asics Stripes, which were originally designed for both visual appeal and structural reinforcement. Representatives from Miyake Design Studio, a long-standing collaborator with Asics, revealed that the Asics Stripe has been an integral part of their designs since its initial introduction in 1966 with the 'Limber Leather' model. The stripes are rooted in functionality, serving to protect the Achilles tendon and enhance the shoe's overall strength.
To create the 'Hyper Taping' model, the studio incorporated thick elastic bands arranged around the shoe, mimicking athletic taping to provide stability and support. The design also includes a wrestling outsole inspired by the gecko's foot structure, extending up the shoe's upper for enhanced grip. Additionally, a new last was developed by widening the wrestling outsole, paired with a responsive SpEVA midsole and an Ortholite insole, ensuring comfort and performance.
The sneaker's upper combines various types of leather and mesh, available in three colorways: the signature fluorescent green, all-black, and all-grey. At the heart of this collection is Issey Miyake's dedication to 'seriously pursuing shoemaking' by merging the brand's technology and creativity with Asics' sports engineering insights.
The 'Issey Miyake Foot' project, a collaboration between Miyake Design Studio and Asics, will launch with the spring/summer 2026 season, available at Issey Miyake, Asics, and select retailers. The 'Hyper Taping' shoe will be released on January 5th, marking a significant step in the evolution of footwear design.
