Kumasi is currently grappling with significant travel disruptions this Christmas season, leaving commuters frustrated and overwhelmed. The usual hustle and bustle that accompanies the search for transportation in city centers has transformed into a scene of chaos, particularly in the Ashanti Region, where many are struggling to find rides during this busy time of year.
At various loading stations, long lines of passengers quickly devolve into disarray as they compete for a limited number of buses and taxis. This frantic environment often leads to heated exchanges and even physical confrontations, as drivers look to take advantage of the increased demand for transport during the holiday period.
This situation is exacerbated by a notable shortage of available buses, which forces many travelers to endure lengthy waits or pay exorbitant fares just to reach their destinations. Reports indicate that some drivers and transport operators are capitalizing on this predicament, significantly increasing their prices—sometimes doubling or even tripling fares—leaving passengers with few options but to either pay these inflated rates or remain stuck.
Rebecca Baffoe, one commuter affected by these circumstances, expressed her frustration over the dramatic fare increases she has witnessed. "Fares that used to be four cedis have skyrocketed to ten cedis, and between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., they can even reach 15 or 20 cedis. We are calling on the government to send more buses to Kumasi to relieve some of the pressure on commuters," she stated.
Another traveler, Charles Dwobeng, highlighted how the desperation felt at overcrowded stations encourages drivers to impose arbitrary pricing. "Even if you manage to find a driver willing to take you, they won't charge the standard fare; instead, they increase it. With so many people desperate for rides, drivers take the opportunity to raise prices as they see fit," he explained.
Georgina Logan noted that the chaos is largely due to the seasonal surge in demand for transportation. "During the holiday season, there is an enormous need for vehicles, and the shortage in supply makes getting around incredibly challenging," she said.
Despite efforts from city authorities to clamp down on unauthorized fare hikes—resulting in some drivers being arrested—many commuters report that these practices continue unabated, as penalties do not seem to deter those willing to exploit the situation.
Areas heavily impacted by these transportation pressures include routes such as Kronum–Afrancho–Buoho, Tafo–Mamponteng, Tech–Ejisu, Santasi–Ahenama–Ahenama Kokoben, Abrepo–Ohwim–Amanfrom, and the Airport Roundabout–Kenyasi. In these locations, congestion often leaves passengers waiting late into the night.
In light of these issues, commuters are appealing to local authorities to increase the deployment of Ayalolo buses on key routes to help alleviate the burden of festive travel and combat fare exploitation during this busy Christmas period.
